TOP 5 Book Tests

Booked by Steve Valentine
What! I hear you cry, how can Booked be top of the list. Well simply because it is cheap, easy, you can use any book, you don’t do any fishing and you can follow up with the Pegasus page effect and there is no memory work. That is a lot of positives in my mind.
I’m not 100% sure of the origin of this, I know Nic Einhorn also taught a similar method. The gimmick is small enough to fit in your wallet, and if you are going to do the pegasus page you can make your own custom to any book for next to nothing.
It is also the only version in this list where you know the word in advance making predictions possible.

Mother of all Book Tests by Ted Karmilovitch
The real selling point with MOAB or its many derivatives is that the book is handed out and the word chosen completely hands off. You can therefore toss the book out if performing for a large audience and I think the distance from the performer to the volunteer does make the effect a bit more amazing.
You do need to fish a little to get to the word, but the method is very sound and in my experience flies by the audience. There is a small amount of memory work, but nothing the average person would find difficult.
Glance by Steve Thompson is a magazine version of MOAB which is cheaper and just as good and comes with two magazines.

Flashback by Larry Becker
Larry Becker’s Flashback concept was one of the first marketed and produced book tests. It uses a well produced and subtly gimmicked book from which it is really easy glimpse the chosen word. The book is handled by the performer during the selection process but the page and word is a free choice.
The Zandman book test is an alternative book test but very much based on Flashback but with an added layer of deception. Whether this added layer is necessary is hard but it makes the book more inspectable prior to the word being chosen, although the books is still held during the selection.
Zandman has produced a variety of realistic books which is useful if you want to have the book freely from a pile

Word in a Million by Nicholas Einhorn
The book is handled by the spectator, in fact is can be any book with a dust jacket. The book itself essentially ungimmicked which give a nice freedom for developing a routine. The price is also low because there is no need to print a special book. The word has to be written down and then glimpsed, but the routine is designed to provide motivation for the action where the moment of the glimpse to completely pass everyone by.

Sheer Luck by Shawn Farquhar
If someone told me a book test could be hilarious and baffling I wouldn’t have believed them. Sheer Luck comes with a complete routine from FISM winner Shawn Farquhar who has performed this on Penn and Teller Fool Us.
It is very easy, with no memory work and the laughs are built-in to the gimmicked book and the routine. It would be hard to vary away from the structure provided so if you are looking at this to adapt into something you already do then it isn’t for you. It is also designed for comedy which I’m aware may not be ideal for most mentalism acts.
