Penguin Marked Cards by Penguin Magic
The only marked deck I used in performance was the Boris Wild deck, until I was convinced to check out the penguin cards.
They match all the benefits of the Boris Wild deck, most notably being made from Bicycle cards and the ability to see the markings from a spread of cards. However I find these easier to read plus they are marked in more than one place which can be useful.
Nor can the price be ignored. At just £9.99 they are half the price of most other decks and perhaps almost cheap enough to use as your standard pack of cards.

DMC Elite Forest Green by DMC Magic
I have to say these cards are genius. Somehow the Elite Forest Green deck has the best hidden yet easiest to see markings at the same time. That does sound impossible.
The back design is unique and has the ‘Optical Marking System’ hidden in plain sight. The size of the markings mean they can be read from quite a distance, the design of the marking means that they can’t be seen unless you are in the know, regardless of their size.
They are printed on the legendary by USPCC on Bee stock so they do handle well. It is just the price and the unusual back design which stops these from being number 1.

The Butterfly Deck by Ondre Psenicka
These are not ‘readers’ like the two decks above them, the markings are indicators of the card value and suit which means a small amount of mental effort is required to decipher the value and suit. This shouldn’t put you off it just takes a bit of getting used to.
The position of the markings is such that only a very small amount of the card needs to be visible making the use of marking seem impossible.
The unique back design hides the marks very well, but it also means a deck switch is not possible. They are also expensive so you are unlikely to use them as your regular deck of choice.
The unique marking system hidden in the back-design of The Butterfly Playing Cards contains two different marking systems that can be used separately, and they will make you a miracle worker if they are combined. An explanation of this written marking system explanation is included, as well as a link to online video instructions.
The Butterfly deck is printed on Cartamundi's card stock which I really like and find more durable that Bicycle stock.

Parlour size Phoenix Marked Deck by Card Shark
Sometimes size does matter and I have found that for stage work, just the extra few millimetres provided by the Parlour size decks really helps visibility. I have personally never warmed to the Phoenix back design, but card Shark have found the ideal size for greater visibility yet still allowing sleight of hand..
These are marked the same way as the regular Phoenix decks, nothing clever just clear reader style markings hidden in the design.

Beyond ESP 3 by Michael Murray
The most obvious time to be using marked deck is in a ESP routine, fortunately these cards look completely innocent, you just wouldn’t bother looking for a mark.
These are super easy to read in the worse lighting conditions and even at a distance whilst still being near on impossible to discover by the non-informed. Really clever thinking, good quality card stock. These should be in every mentalist’s arsenal.
