Visualise to actualise

Visualisation

At all the stages of creating or learning a trick I use visualisation. Indeed, even before you buy a trick or prop you should exercise visualisation.

I mean running through what you plan to do and how you plan to do it in your head. This visualisation process runs right though every stage of the tricks development. Arguably not the first stage because that is the inspiration point that leads to the start of the creative process.

By visualising myself performing the trick, I can develop the method. The choreography is all in my head, and I can play with known methods and sleights. If I have no idea how to the method I research, often adding props if necessary and perhaps playing the story or plot to justify new props. All these things need to be run through in my head to judge what works or can be made to work.

Once the trick is reading for scripting, I visualise the whole thing step by step to write the ‘patter’ and plan for foreseeable answers to questions. I also then know how I will move and the timing for every procedure. I focus on highlighting the points the audience must understand and the building of expectation.

I can also recognise the parts that may take too long or possibly be dull and visualise ways of making them more engaging.

My aim is that by the time it comes for me to be stepping on the stage or approaching the group, it feels like have experienced performing before many times. Yes to me it is mental experience which is brilliant because I can experience every possibility before it happens.
