Give them a chance

Here is the scenario. You’ve spent some cash on a new killer effect, you have practiced it until your hands are raw. You stroll up to a friendly looking couple, the patter rolls of your tongue, you technique is flawless (as always). You finish the routine with its powerful kicker ending and phufft! They nod politely.

Why didn’t they react?

Chances are you’ve caught them cold. She was probably describing the bowel operation her mother-in-law had and all of a sudden you’ve drawn an X on her hand in sharpie.

It is important to establish yourself in some way, either before you mention you are a magician e.g. Ask if anyone has lost a bunch of receipts and then change them into £50 pound notes, or by producing the props in a magical manner perhaps e.g. Sponge balls or coins from a purse frame. Even just a gentle comedy warm up will help.

It will help them realise what to expect and then they can relax a bit and enjoy themselves. They will also start to build you up in their minds which will encourage them to give you bigger reactions.

Also remember each group is fresh and not warmed up for magic. It is easy to come from a high at the last time and then hit the next table in top gear expecting them all to be up to speed.

Give them enough time to like you and trust you, they will then give you the reactions your magic deserves.
