Repect and empower, free yourself from guilt

It is of course very hard not to be influenced, sometimes it is the style we steal which is hard to govern but lines and bits of business is very easy to self-regulate.

Hand on heart I have never knowing stolen anything since the 90’s when I used a gag impromptu on the spur of the moment in the heat of performance. I got a firm slap on the wrist by a mentor of mine as soon as I came off stage.

I’ve never forgotten the shame.

However not every line or bit of business I use is mine. I have ‘borrowed’. Some of you may now be thinking well what is the difference? Let me explain.

I think we all know what stealing is, in fact I think most of us have felt the powerlessness of having been robbed. I never want to make anyone feel like that, the secret is to give the originator all the power. Quite simply, I ask.

It sounds simple, but from the responses I have received, it doesn’t seem to be done very often. I don’t have the mentality to steal, I see feel the guilt and shame from 25 years ago.

Natalie Palmides has a brilliant show called Nate on Netflix which highlights the power of asking permission. She is asking to grope members of the audience which demonstrates the transference of power brilliantly and comically.

Asking the originator to use their material shows appreciation and respect as well as empowering them. It is not only the right thing to do, but I very nice thing to do. You will feel better for it.

You won’t always get the answer you want, but the great thing about that is you now need to take another path.

Never steal, only borrow if you have to, and free yourself from guilt.
