The Magicians Omelette

The omelette is seen as the ultimate test of a chef's culinary skill. This seemd odd to me at first, because it was my Dad's fall back when Mum was out, and bless him, he was no Marco Pierre White.

Actually the reasoning is solid. To acheive excellence in something so simple requires attention to the smallest of details.

This is why I view the Glide as the test of a magician's magical abilities.

There really is nothing to the Glide, and what there is happens out of sight because that is how the move is naturally performed. I have never seen anyone struggle with the mechanics of the Glide, its a doddle to do...badly. To this day I have only seen one person perform it in a fooling and natural way. That magician was Andrew Galloway who was taught by John Ramsay. In fact I have seen very few magicians known for their card abiliity ever attempt the Glide, I suspect because they know the move isn't convincing unless done perfectly and getting that perfection is far from easy. Because like an omelette, you have so little to play with.

I'd judge a magician more highly if he acknowledged he avoided the Glide because it wasn't a natural action than one who uses it, despite it being scrambled eggs rather than an omelette.

I can't explain how Andrew Galloway does it so well. You really need to see him do it (on The Magic of John Ramsay DVD"). It is a real lesson on the little things and paying attention to the smallest of details.

The simplest of things can be the hardest.
