Prism by Max Maven

Very rarely does a book meet my expectations, but I have to say prism does exactly that. I like Max Maven’s mentalism and his techniques. He more than anyone understands how the performance and mise en scene create the effect rather the method.

I’m not going to bash the methods employed, they are ‘classic’ which means to say there is little new for the experienced mentalist to gain technique wise. If you have read a few copies of the Jinx, Anneman and Corinda then you’ll be very familiar with every method in the book, but you will gain massively in absorbing how Max puts the effect together and employs the methods.

For the amateur or someone starting mentalism it is a brilliant catalogue of old techniques employed correctly for maximum impact.

Some of the effects do use a confederate, which I’m still on the fence about as a method. One such trick in the book, Pre-duck-tion, I have seen performed live and I was fooled and blown away by it. The audience reacted strongly too and I suppose if I never knew the method use a confederate I would be impressed to this day. The audience I expect do have this lasting memory of a miracle.

The routines are a good mix of close-up, parlour and stage with most routines being adaptable to all environments. And there are a lot of routines in here, all of which genuinely seem to be from Max’s repertoire, so no filler, silly methods poor effects. Nor is this trendy or heavily gimmicked, I'd boldly say the effects are timeless. If you are looking for propless mentalism you will be dissappointed otherwise this book contains almost all the techniques you will ever need.

This really is a book for anyone interested in this style of magic, the breadth of the material is huge, the quality always high.
