Magic with phones just isn't possible

I really don’t see myself as a purist but the heavy reliance of gimmicks I have seen in recent years isn’t for me, especially the electronic ones. I appreciate I’m swimming against the tide, but I find what I able to do with my phone normally is magic. I really have no idea of the limits of a circuit board, Wi-Fi and RFID tags.

When a new electronic marvel is shown to me, I am in awe. These new gizmos are simply amazing most of the time and great fun to play with. But and this is quite a big but, it doesn’t feel like magic to me. At least not as I know it.

I could be being harsh here, as a lot of the time, the demonstration isn’t wrapped in a presentation of any note, like a sleight being shown rather used.

In magic with everyday ‘brainless’ objects such as coins or rope, I understand the constraints. A rope cannot be cut and restored, a coin cannot pass through a table leaving the only conclusion to be magic.
I have no comprehension of what a phone and watch can do anymore. Jason can sit at work and watch people delivering stuff to his front door (not drugs – I don’t think so anyway), and his BBQ even connects to his watch.

In short, in a world where your BBQ alerts you when to turn your sausages, I cannot be amazed magically by tricks with phones. I can be impressed but not amazed and others must feel them same.

Without clear constraints as to what is possible, there is no magic.
