Top 5 Tricks with Dice

Mental Dice by Tony Anverdi
I can't not start this list with the trick that has been top of our Dog Bol***cks leader for the last few weeks. The main effect is that three different coloured dice are rolled without you seeing them, yet you can name the number rolled on each dice, simple. The thinking, constuction and technology involved all combine to make a brilliant gimmick fit for 007 himself. The dice are now rechargable wirelessly so you don't need to worry about changing batteries and the on-line tutorial provides plenty of ideas for routines. Mental Dice can be used for Free Will style effects or Mental Epic routines too. It can of course be used in almost every situation and since the props do everything you just need to create an engaging presentation.

Of Dice and Men
I first saw this performed by Tom Stone an a convention and the whole theatre roared with laughter. The premise is a volunteer chooses by the roll of a dice how you should greet them, the punchline is one of the best reveals in magic. A great routine which is both amazing and hilarious which is the reason all the professionals have picked this up. If you want to add that bit of comedy to your show this is really good place to start as it will fit most styles and fills that time when you are getting a spectator onto the stage.

Sacks Dice Routine
A classic of magic, good enough for Vernon and Daryl! This is a wonderful multi-phase routine using regular dice and simple sleight of hand, making it a great impromptu trick. The spots on the dice seem to change at the whim of the magician. It is a bit knacky but certainly not difficult and you'll be surprised how much you can have with it. Call me old school but I love sleight of hand tricks with everyday objects and this one hits the mark.

Wild Dice - Mark Leveridge
This is a wonderful piece of bar magic ideal for table hopping. With dice in matchbox drawers you play a sort of shell and peas game. As with all the best routines the magic grows with each phase and the finale where extra dice appear is terrific. Again, this is easy yet entertaining magic that is fun to perform.

Forcing Dice by Diamond Jim tyler
These forcing dice are more of a utility tool than an effect in themselves but you'd be surprised at how many routines you can dream up with them. Unlike loaded dice there is no possible error so if you are doing russian roulette I know which I'd choose. If you have an idea for an effect which needs options eliminated these will do the job perfectly. The only problem is that getting the final number can take a few rolls, but it can also build the tension.

Ended up playing with dice effects a lot during lockdown, and gotta give a shout out to an effect produced by Merlins in Wakefield called die-cast using a blank dice, gives the audience no doubt that the number is a fair choice because they choose it themselves! I put together a conjurors choice type effect using an odds only die as well. Bit bold using a die with only 3 numbers on, but I like it! Reply to this comment
