TOP 5 Do As I Do Routines

Do as I do Plumes by Mel Mellers
Mel Mellers really has made this routine a signature piece. All the classic jokes and interactions are there, although it works best for children don't hestitate to use in on adults too. The premise that the volunteer is unable to copy the magicians simple actions correctly is surprisingly funny. This is a trick which can get as silly as need be and made to fit any audience, my only concern is it doesn't have a naturally strong finish.

Tricky Turvy Bottles by Rick Bronson
The Tricky Turvy Bottles is the adult version of the Do As I Do plumes, or rather the plume are the children/family version of the bottles. I have seen too many people fail to get reactions from this trick that to recommend it is a surprise. In the past most magicians who perform it come across as obnoxious and alienate the audience. This changed when I saw the late Woody Pittman perform the trick with great results, there nothing particluarly original in the performnace he played it so well and chose the right volunteer. Then stepped up Rick Bronson who used as the opener in his stand up comedy act for years. He killed with it! He really let burst his emotions in a way most magicians would be scared to. His routine is the one I would use, it is in '7' by Rick Bronson. Be brave.

Timmy Toilet Paper by Tom Burgoon
Tom Burgoon is a very funny man and this Do as I Do torn and restored toilet paper is genius framing for the classic effect. The use of toilet paper and a mouth coil elevate the simnple concept into a truely memorable peice of comedy magic. It isn't a cheap trick to buy, especially when you consider the props required, but it isn't often a routine this good and unique gets written. It is worth every penny.

Copy Cat by David Parr
A great routine where the spectator and magician mirror each other, they both select and exchange a playing card, and they match! There aren't many effects that both fool Penn & Teller and are really easy to do. If you then add the fact it can be reset quickly making it ideal for walkaround you just about have the perfect routine. It is a real fooler! and yet the dirty work is done by a simple gimmick so it is nearly self working. You can ham the trick up as much as you like or play it straight, either way you'll get gasps when the cards match. It is the routining which makes this special. I've used it on stage and in close up situations, utterly brilliant.

Other Rope Routine by Mac King
I don't believe this concept started with Mac King, I know Alberto De Figuieredo does a similar routine, but I haven't tracked down the origin. Both routines are fun, multi-phased, and involve the spectator copying the magician as they cut and restore a rope. It all ends sucessfully and the surprise of the volunteers restored rope is not to underestimated. You don't have to take my word for how good this is, David Copperfield used it in his show.
