The Book of Wonder Volume 1 by Tommy Wonder

I hope it comes as no suprise that the Books of Wonder are on the list. Tommy Wonder was a brilliant exponent of misdirection and I believe the first in 'modern times' to try and explain it in a useful manner in print. At the beginning of the first volume, there are some 30 pages dedicated to misdirection. That may not sound like much but it is clear and concise. He also shows his experence by covering how to handle tough customers and difficult spectators. The other essays in the book could also help with misdirection indirectly such as relaxation and breathing. As a bonus of course you get the rest of book which contains some of the best close up magic.

The Magic of John Ramsay by Andrew Galloway

John Ramsay was legend of misdirection and Andrew Galloway had the luck to be his friend and pupil. The last segment on each of these DVDs, which are dated (but don't let this put off the information will never go out of date) is dedicated to misdirection. This is probably the best visual explanation and demostration of misdirection I have come across. Andrew doesn't just explain the concept or principle but he actually runs through how use misdirection for particular moves including false transfers, double lift, the glide , palming, top change and a false count. This also includes a nice explanation of the 'crossing the gaze' idea mis-credited to Juan Tamariz.
If that wasn't enough Andrew then does a rather good three ball routine only to show how much it was improved when given a bit of Ramsay magic. The rest of the DVD is solid classic magic, but for the highlight is this last section and actually seeing the glide done well.

Misdirection by Dariel Fitzkee

I don't think misdirection could be more comprehensively covered that in this volume by Fitzkee. I wager most of the best magicians cite this as the major resource on misdirection, it covers movement, attention, naturalness as well as diversion and distraction which have come to think of misdirection as. Examples of tricks are used within the explanations which really help the clarity. There is so much within this book it is impossible to convey without just listing the contents, it is fair to say if you interested in improving your misdirection or your magic in general this is a must read.

Caught on Tape by Tom Stone

I'll put my hands up now and admit it, there isn't a separate section on misdirection on this DVD. However Tom Stone, like Tommy Wonder (who was a big influence on him) really knows his chops when it comes to cognitive behaviour and he uses it so so well. Did you know when you first someone you check out their crotch, but then forget you did it! Tom admits he hasn't found a use for that titbit but it fun to know. Throughout the explanations on this DVD the use of misdirection techniques become clear and it is obvious as to how you shoud apply them to your magic. Of course Tom also explains so much more on how to make you magic not just better but have a bigger reaction from the audience. This is one inspiring DVD.

Five Points of Magic by Juan Tamariz

I'm including this with the hope that it will soon be back in print and available again. Personally, I think Juan Tamariz moves around too much and seem too affected but he certainly knows his stuff and if it works for him who am i to argue. This five points mentioned in the title are the eyes, voice, hands, body and feet. You won't be surprised that 'crossing the gaze' is mentioned among other techniques with the eyes which most view as the most important feature misdirection.
