One reason to read a book - and a few extra

In truth it isn’t possible to say that one learing medium is any better than another.

The old story is that with a DVD you will end up mimicking the performer and becoming a clone. You’d be hard pushed to argue there isn’t a much higher chance of this happening when you can actually watch the effect being performed than simply read, but at the same time watching a brilliant magician is always a benefitial learning experience.

Books aren’t as easy to learn from is another common cry. Some aren’t and a lot are dated, but things are changing. A nicer font, clear photographs from the correct angle of the best moment really help more trying to pause a film. The latest Vanishing Inc books are remarkable for clarity.

Personally, I find a book more portable, it can be read anywhere without disturbing people. The pause button is a book-mark, chapters can be flicked to and rewind is the turn of a page. You can control the pace of learning with a book, you don’t have the author moving on to the next effect out of your control.

But for me, I believe a book gives you the best medium for trick selection. You decide whether a trick is worth investing your time on, just by reading it and using your imagination. You aren’t influenced by an L&L crowd going wild, or tipsy teenagers on the Vegas strip screaming and jumping about in circles. It is a simp,e way of avoiding the heavy hype and marketing which has become the norm.

Your job is to take the effect off the page into the real world and see what reactions you get, see how you can improve the reactions. Earn those jumps and whahoos.
