It is horses for courses, but which stack should you learn?

It is the million dollar question everyone asks when considering a memorised stack. Is there an answer? Well Yes and No.

Firstly there a loads of stacks to choose from, not just the two everyone talks about; Aronson and Mnemonica. Strangely enough the Nikola which is in Royal Road is largely ignored as is the easier cyclic Eight Kings or Si Stebbins.

I suggest experimenting with the Eight Kings or Si Stebbins first before plunging into the memorisation of Aronson or Mnemonica. They only take minutes to learn but produce miracles. You will probably find you want to learn some decent false shuffles or deck switches to add more deception, and it is best you are happy with these skills before launching into memorised deck work.

Assuming you have the above under your belt, you are going to choose Mnemonica to learn. Why not Aronson? Simply because it came first and pathed the way for Mnemonia. Would you buy Sixth Sense 1.0 knowing there is Sixth Sense 3.0?

Simon Aronson was a visionary and excellent card man. He developed his stack for his needs and proceeded to create effects which used it. Primarily I believe it started with Poker Demonstration style tricks but then he saw more and more ingenious ways a memorised deck could be used. Juan Tamariz climbed on Simon’s shoulders to produce a stack which is also useful for poker deals but has other qualities which can be exploited. It can also be set-up from new deck order using Faro shuffles.

Since Mnemonica hit the neighbourhood with Tamariz singing its praises it has become the most popular memorised deck. Whether it is better is neither here nor there, if you want to keep up with the times, it has to Mnemonica you learn. New effects are coming out from big hitters like Woody Aragon and Denis Behr which alone make it worth knowing.

When I was a child, video cassette recorders were released. But there were two formats, BetaMax and VHS. People made a choice almost like tossing a coin. Despite BetaMax giving better video quality, VHS became the most popular because it had the bigger manufacturers behind it. BetaMax is now all be forgotten. And now of course even VHS is now obselete with the arrival of the DVD.

You can make all the claims you like regarding Aronson and even the Nikola system, but they are still BetaMax.
