Share the spotlight and spread the power

In his rather wonder book One Degree, John Guastaferro suggests the idea of taking a traditional magic trick, which focuses on a 'magic happening' and turning it into a remarkable feat of circumstance or luck. In One degree he illustrates this with his wonderful trick 'Behind the back Triumph'. Instead of the magician performing ‘magic’, a spectator has, behind their back and by chance or luck righted a deck of cards mixed face-up and face down, all the cards now being facing up except the one they chose at the very beginning. I can't tell you the secret, it isn't difficult and it blows minds. i know you already want to do the trick.

Just reading it you can see how the power has been shifted to the volunteer, which also means all the attention and limelight too. Suddenly the trick makes the spectator the special one! I’m not against showing off a bit of skill, but I think being appreciated for making people feel wonderful is better than appreciation for skill.

Michael Murray’s Solution is a great version of a Rubik’s Cube which does exactly this and it kills because of it!

Why are we performing in the first place? I hope it isn't to show off but to entertain, bring a good time and help people feel good about themselves.

I’m off to review all the effects I do, may be with a tweak or to I can empower the layman and get bigger reactions.
