Does Size Matter Poker v Bridge

Using bridge size cards tends to make you social pariah in your magic club and yet before I was a magician, I’d only ever handled bridge sized cards. I didn’t know there was a whole different size, nor did I recognise the back design of any particular brand (may be Waddingtons?)

I must also point out that the likes of Tommy Wonder and Paul Daniel used bridge sized cards. So why do so many people refuse to use bridge size cards?

Putting ego and following the crowd to one side poker size cards do have advantages.

  • Obviously because they are bigger, they are that bit more visible, which can be useful even in closeup situations.
  • They are usually printed on finer card stock than bridge sized cards, so handling is easier and they last longer.
  • Due to their extra width, Poker size cards hold crimps better.
  • Most quality gaffs come in poker size cards, so if you use bridge size most of the time you will need to switch decks and that may feel awkward.

I think the only reason people are tempted to use Bridge sized cards is to help with palming, the fear that their hands are too small. I have small hands with little leeway either side if I palm a Poker sized card, but I’m pretty accurate and careful yet even so I understand the fear of flashing and may be smaller cards are prudent.

The real bottom line is the above advantages may not be applicable to you, I imagine for the majority of effects the best card size is simply whichever you are used to. Don’t let peer pressure influence you, find what you are more comfortable with and stick to your guns.
