Let it be sponge - Part 1

Here at PropDog art knows no boundaries and is found in many and unique forms, such as… sponge!

Having cut small bits of different materials (on purpose and by accident) over the years, I never thought that a ball of sponge could be transformed into other distinctive shapes, until a few years ago.

It all began with a set of sponge strawberries that Dave used to make for a PropDog customer. One day I was asked to try and replicate them. Now, I would never say that the strawberries I made came out better than Dave’s version, because they didn’t. Plus, if they had have done, Dave would probably have cut off my sponge supply for good! Snipping off tiny bits of sponge for hours was not a thrilling experience looking back, but the end result was beyond any doubt rewarding and it kept me going and improving.

Since that day I have done countless “experiments” to achieve a realistic look with each sponge creation I have put my mind and hands on. As a consequence, a lot of Goshman sponge balls have been destroyed along the way (or as I prefer to say “reshaped”). I would cut too deep, apply too much colour, end up with the wrong colour, put too much glue on or simply concluded that the dog I have meant to make looks more like a bear! Of course, all this cannot be said without mentioning the awkward times; like when I had to go on a mission to the local supermarket, armed with a ruler, in search of the perfect sized and coloured avocados, bananas or walnuts. You would think they are all the same, right?! Well, they’re not!

Jokes aside, it has all been worth the effort and I have enjoyed every bit of my journey, so far. Having been involved in the Magic industry for several years now, I still practise the art of transforming this unusual material into multiple shapes and characters in order to bring both my and others’ creative ideas to life.
