The Phil Deck - all the various version explained

I’m Phil, no I am Phil, I’m Phil.

Trevor Duffy has released many a fine trick or prop, the ‘Phil’ deck being one of them. However, he has also released numerous versions of it, which has caused confusion as the naming does little to differentiate between each flavour of Phil.

The Phil Deck is the original version. It is just the single phase trick, as was the ‘Fred’ trick upon which it is based. A friendly volunteer thinks of a card and you name it – ‘Phil’. To prove you had it correct you show all the cards have a different name written on them. The volunteer names the card they were thinking off, lets say the 3 of hearts. You reveal the 3 of hearts has Phil written on the back.

The Phil Plus Deck, gives you the first phase, plus a second phase. The second phase allows the spectator to say a name (4 letters) and you name the actual card value. It really is a nice kicker to the standard Phil plot and this is the version PropDog recommends.

Phil Outdone is the same as Phil Plus but with different instructions. You can do the same phases as with Phil Plus. Again, the version recommended by PropDog.

Phil Plus 2 gives you the same two phases but with male names. This sounds like a good idea, but their seems to be less popular male names with just 4 letters so you have U.S or Australian names creeping in, like ‘Brad’ etc. Here at PropDog we stick to the girls names versions above.

You also have a Blank Phil Deck and Blank Phil Plus Deck, these simply come with no names printed on the back of the cards so you can customise it. This may be a good idea at trade shows or ethnic gatherings. The blank Phil deck refill comes with no instructions, so if you are not familiar with the deck remember to buy the Blank Phil with booklet.

Dave at PropDog highly rates Phil Plus and has his own routine which can be found under the How To section of the blog.
