Inspirations by Larry Hass

I once had the displeasure of sitting through a Larry Hass lecture. The guy carried this air of grandeur and an ego of superiority which he spent 90 minutes failing to justify, with dull performances of classic tricks followed by dreary explanations.

To say I avoided this book this an understatement, it seemed the physical incarnation of the 90 minutes of my life I could not get back thanks to one Larry Hass of the McBride School of Magic.

It is a very nicely designed, well-made book which will last years of re-reading and not surprisingly there is huge picture of Larry complete with ego on the cover. I strongly advise opening that cover as soon as possible, because the contents of this book is actually rather good. Damn it, the contents is great. It turns out Larry Hass really knows and understands a hell of lot about magic and its theory. He can also write really well, so it isn’t like wading through pig muck but more jet skiing across Lake Como.

He covers a huge range of topics and dares to challenge popular misconceptions with very sound logic. The bugger even changed my point of view a couple of times. Larry also benefits from hanging out with the right people, Burger, McBride, Penn and Teller and so on, they really help bring the book alive. So there you have it, Larry Hass is terrific on paper just dire in real life.

I can honestly say this book lived up to its title, it opened my eyes to a few things, got me thinking about the right things and I closed it inspired.
