The very real Danger of Silly String Roulette

I’ve been chuckling at the PropDog Lounge and thought I ought to share a story of my own.

I was doing a stage show in a theatre and because of the lighting I couldn’t really see the audience. I was about to perform a ‘silly string roulette’ routine and asked for a volunteer. I saw a hand and invited the volunteer on stage – only to see a little girl in her best party frock smiling sweetly at me. As the routine involves spraying silly string all over my volunteer at the end I decided it wouldn’t go down well to spray her so I invited one of her accompanying adults to join me and Grandma came on stage too.

The routine went well (six boxes numbered by volunteer each with a silly string can in, but only one works – mine) until we were down to the final two cans. I stood back to back with Grandma and we did ‘three paces, turn and fire’. I sprayed silly string all over Grandma… but the little girl had never seen silly string before and was horrified at what was happening to Grandma. She started crying loudly. I turned to look at the howling child, with my finger frozen in place still spraying silly string, and to my horror watched myself spraying her with silly string too.

Sadly the ground didn’t open up and swallow me so I had to apologise profusely and ask Grandma to calm her down before asking the audience to give them a big hand ‘for being such good sports’.

(I decided that if I ever managed to get myself into a similar situation I would turn the can around and spray myself ‘by mistake’)

Oops!
