Magic in Tanzania
In 2008, I was lucky enough to spend the New Year performing in Tanzania. It was an amazing experience. I was in the town of Arusha and apparently the last time they'd had a magician there was in 1965! I was performing magic for the Arusha Hotel's New Year party with Singer Audley Anderson (from Fame Acadamy) and his guitarist Pete Nulty, two of the nicest and funniest guys I have ever met and since have become two of my closest friends! The party was fantastic and although I was working it was probably one of my best New Year's Eve's ever! And to top it off, we had a day's safari the next day.
The magic went down really well, the locals loved it, but were really freaked out and they really believed that I had special powers. Some even became a little scared of me.
One of my impromptu ’go to’ effects out there, was a bill switch with a difference, I was plucking leaves off the trees and changing them in to dollar bills and giving them away.
Needless to say, word travelled really fast around the town and before I knew it I had lots of people following me everywhere and was being asked to do all sorts of weird things from fixing broken mobile phones to amputees asking for me to heal them!
One of the funnier moments was when we stopped the jeep to meet a couple of Maasai Mara children looking after goats. I plucked a leaf from a tree and bill switched it to a dollar bill and gave it to one of them and repeated for the other. The looks on their face was priceless, but it was the comment from our guide that really made us laugh, “Do you know what you have just done?” he said, “No, what?” I replied. “Well those kids are going to go home and show their parents the dollar bills, which are worth the equivalent to a week’s wage for them” he says, “the parents are going to ask where they got it from, imagine their reply! “Well mummy, this white man in a black suit, stopped his jeep in the middle of the Savannah, got out, pulled a leaf from a tree and changed it to this money!” “STOP LYING TO ME CHILD! WHERE DID YOU REALLY GET IT?” “Honest mummy, we’re telling the truth!” …so funny …sorry kids!
